Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford Commencement Address（Assignment 6）

Steve Jobs is one of Apple’s founders.
I think the reason why he is so popular and amazing is not only because he is a promoter of Apple, but also his thoughts and passion to life.

Jobs divided his speech into three parts: his born, love, lose, and death.

Jobs was adopted by Mr. and Ms. Jobs.
When Jobs was small, his father took him to experience lots of things.
Young Jobs had lots of curiosity with everything and dared to find out things he wanted to know.
When he was in school, he was not a student who would quiet sitting on his chair.
He dropped out classes he thought that were bored and dropped in classes that he was interested in.
In teachers’ eyes, he was not a good student, but I think to America’s spirit, he was a good learner.

Second part of the speech, Jobs talks about love and lose, and I think this is the most important part of his speech.
Because of his love and passion, he founded Apple, a great kingdom of computer.
However, due to some reasons, he was fired. That means he lost Apple Company.
At the time, he didn’t know what to do.
Thanks he didn’t lost his energy, passion and love to those things; he kept working hard and learning hard.
Then, he found out his true love, his wife, and he went back to Apple to work.
The main point Jobs wants to tell us is whenever bad things happen, do not lose the passion and love to what you really want to work for.

Finally, he mentions about death.
Jobs says he was once got cancer.
At that time, he thought lots of things including his last words to his wife and children.
However, his tumor became a curable one.
This terrible experience really made him think a lot.
We always ask people: if you have one day to live, what do you want to do?
If you have no idea what you want to do, that is more terrible then cancer! (I think.)
Because that means you are a person who has no dream and no passion.
Human being’s value is that we can think, we can have dream and we can use our hands to realize it.

So, at the end of the speech, Jobs reminds everyone: stay hungry, stay foolish.
That means always be hungry to find the answer of what you don’t know.
Be foolish to what you think you had ready know, because knowledge is wider than what you saw.

Top dollar－the highest amount you can pay for something
Bells and whistles－means some extra thing such as camera on a cell phone, fancy stuff
Sturdy－it is strong and reliable ＜－＞ flimsy
Looks－physical appearance of something, a thing or an object
Functional－working correctly, always do things what it has to do

HERE IS NORMAL SPEED DIALOG PART

First time I heard the dialog; there were a lot of words I can’t understand.
Because those unknown vocabularies, I felt nervous when I kept listening.
Then, I missed listened of some parts.
After the explanations, I can easy understand what they say.
Although the dialog’s speed change back to normal, I think I can understand more parts then my first hear.
However, some of their pronounce makes me a little bit confused, such as two words that pronounce together.
Maybe I should listen more and get use of it.

Answer Machine

At first, I only read the topic and then listen to the radio only one time.
After that, I did the quiz. My score is 60.
I didn’t hear why Hank went to Lisa’s house and I only heard 7:00~8:00.

Then, I did the vocabulary activities.
Except multiple-choice and short-answer questions, I all got 100 scores.
“Multiple-choice and short-answer questions” contains a lot of phrase I didn’t know.
Those phrases had existed in the radio. I think I ignored them.

Grocery Shopping

I heard this radio for three times because it spoke too much numbers.
However, compare with “Answer Machine”, I think this one is easier.
“Grocery Shopping” is conversation. It’s not too quick and it contains emotions.
It’s easy to understand what the environment is.
“Answer Machine” is Hank quick leaving his message, so I am hard to understand.

Then, I did the quiz. Because I heard three times, I got 100 scores.
In vocabulary activity part, “Multiple-Choice and Short-Answer Questions”, I still can’t take 100 scores.
I think some vocabularies I still didn’t know at that time.

Spending too much？（Assignment 4）

“Spending too much” is Studio Classroom in August 13 and 14’s lesson.

Why we buy things we don’t need but want?
There is a chemical called dopamine that makes people impulsive.
People buy things they want to satisfy.

How to prevent spending too much?
Go window shopping without money and credit cards.

However, I think that is impossible.
If you don’t have money, how do you take public conveyances to shopping mall?
If you drive your own cars or ride motorcycle, you still need money to pay for parking.


So, fallowing the paragraph, I think is more common and useful.

First, make a shopping list and buy only the things on the list.
Also, you can only bring exactly enough money. Then, you won’t have extra money to buy unnecessary things.

In addition, pay in cash. I think it’s the most important.
I don’t like to use credit card and I don’t have one, too.
If I own one, I will always think I still have money to pay for everything.
That sounds terrible.

There are a lot of news about credit-card debts.
Most of people who owe money are social freshmen.
Once they get their salaries, they buy things without using their brain before.

Many people complain that shopping is their way to release their stress, but spend too much money can cause another kind of stress.
The better way is to find another way to release stress such as exercise.
That way, you can save a lot of money.

At the beginning, I only listened to the radio.
However, I couldn’t get use to the speaker’s pronounce. I could only understand 60~70%.
Then, I listened again with reading the paragraph. Besides some vocabularies, I could understand the whole part.
Finally, I checked the words I don’t know, and then, I did some practice.

This paragraph is not so hard, but very useful.

Drafting Board

last week, i got my first drafting board(手繪版).

because i was lack of money, i brought a second-hand one.

however, it still looks nice and new.



i had learn hand-painting for several years.

as we use computer so often today, i really want to learn how to use computer software and some tools to paint.


mouse is hard to use to paint on the computer, so at the beginning, i borrowed a drafting board from my friend.

then, after one month, i asked him to teach me how to choose a drafting board.

finally, i bought one from auction.

now, in my free time, i will practice.

becouse i love glove puupet shows, i always take them as my topic to paint.

i always try diiferent types and different skills to paint, so these works' styles are totally different.


i really like to paint, so i will keep working hard.
